 An independent sovereign republic, Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean and a full member country of the European Union.
Its jurisprudence and laws are based on a combination of English common law, British statutes in force in Cyprus on the day before its independence from Great Britain in 1960, and legislation that the Republic has subsequently enacted itself.
In recent years, Cyprus has grown to become one of the most important international commercial and financial centres within the European Union, offering access to a significant number of favourable tax treaties worldwide.
